COMMERCIAL PILOT LICENCE REQUIREMENTS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Blue Chip Flight School graduates are working in aviation roles in South Africa and abroad. Throughout your pilot training, Blue Chip’s instructors provide guidance and support as you work towards the theoretical and practical requirements of your Commercial Pilot Licence.

But before we help you take off, let’s explore the requirements that come with earning your CPL.

  • You need to be at least 18
  • Hold a valid Private Pilot Licence with Night Rating
  • Class 1 Flight Medical

Theoretical Pilot Training

Before earning your Commercial Pilot Licence, you’ll need more than just a cool pair of aviators. To earn your gold wings, you must first pass all your CPL subjects with a minimum score of 75%.

Practical Pilot Training

To obtain a Commercial Pilot Licence under the South African Civil Aviation Authority, a student must log a minimum of 200 flight hours:

  • Minimum 100 hours PIC, with at least 10 hours flown at night.
  • Minimum 50 hours cross country (if doing with Instrument Rating)
  • At least 40 hours of instrument flight training, up to 20 hours in an approved simulator (if doing Instrument Rating)
  • Conversion on a Variable Pitch and retractable gear SE aircraft, minimum 3 hours,
  • Multi-Engine Rating – Conversion on Aircraft minimum of 3 hours
  • For a Multi-Engine IR, at least 5 hours of instrument training must be done in a multi-engine aircraft (up to 3 of those hours may be in an ME simulator (FSTD)

Commercial Pilot Licence Support

We offer economical training rental (hire & fly) opportunities after hours during weekdays and on weekends. Students can stay in touch with Blue Chip management and their Flight Instructors for recommendations to achieve optimum experience and learning benefits.

Once you have completed the required number of Pilot in Command hours and passed all the theoretical exams, you will be ready to move into the advanced training phase. Prepare yourself for vigorous preparation and skill sharpening, following a structured program, before your instructor recommends you for the CPL test.

The final phase involves training on a variable pitch, retractable gear aircraft for the Single-Engine VFR/IFR CPL. As part of the final phase of training, students may complete a Multi-Engine (ME) rating and conduct their CPL flight test on a Multi-Engine aircraft.

We are proud to offer an in-house glass cockpit Baron 55 for this purpose.

The flight test must be conducted by a Designated Examiner approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).

SINGLE-ENGINE AND MULTI-ENGINE CPL TRAINING RATING

The final phase of training for a Single-Engine VFR or IFR Commercial Pilot Licence is completed on an aircraft with a variable-pitch propeller and retractable landing gear.

Students may also complete a Multi-Engine Rating during the final phase of training and conduct their Commercial Pilot Licence flight test in a multi-engine aircraft. Blue Chip Flight School has an in-house glass-cockpit Baron 55 available for this purpose.

The Commercial Pilot Licence flight test must be conducted by a Designated Examiner approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
