PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE (PPL)

Are your ready to change the passenger seat in an aircraft for the cockpit? A Private Pilot Licence is your ticket to the skies. With a PPL you are licenced to fly for fun during daylight hours in good weather conditions.

It is the foundational step in aviation training and the first phase towards your Commercial Pilot Licence.

PPL REQUIREMENTS

Medical

Students must be declared medically fit by a designated aviation medical examiner approved by the Commissioner for Civil Aviation. A Class II medical certificate is required, it is valid for 60 months if you're under 40, or 24 months if you're 40 or older.

An initial chest X-ray is also needed. The medical requirements are similar to those for a standard life insurance policy.

We will provide a list of accredited medical practitioners.

A person holding a Private Pilot Licence is allowed to fly an aircraft for recreational purposes during daytime in good weather conditions.

Doing your PPL in Pretoria with Blue Chip Flight School means you will be trained by qualified and experienced flight instructors in both the theoretical and practical aspects of becoming a pilot.

Training with Blue Chip Flight School in Pretoria means you will be trained by qualified and experienced flight instructors who combined expert knowledge with hands-on flying experience. From ground school to your first solo flight, we’ll prepare you for take-off, literally and figuratively.

Citizenship & Legal Age

A student must be 15 years or older to apply for a Student Pilot Licence, 16 before going solo, and 17 to obtain a Private Pilot Licence. Additionally, you must be a South African citizen or a holder of a study permit. Proficiency in English up to level 4 is required, and you must also hold a valid student pilot license.

Blue Chip Flight School Enrolment Requirements

Our enrolment requirements are designed with your success in mind. They are in place to ensure that every student has the best possible opportunity to progress confidently and efficiently

Minimum age of 18 years

Pilot training requires a high level of maturity, responsibility, and decision-making ability. The age requirement ensures that students are able to manage the academic and practical demands of aviation training. (South African citizens may enrol from age 15 under specific conditions, subject to individual assessment.)

English proficiency (minimum ICAO Level 4)

Aviation communication is conducted in English worldwide. A minimum standard, as set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ensures that students can clearly understand instructions, communicate effectively with air traffic control, and operate safely in both routine and emergency situations.

Driver’s licence (preferred)

Holding a driver’s licence indicates a basic level of road awareness, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to follow rules and procedures. These skills are transferable and beneficial in the aviation environment, particularly in developing situational awareness and multitasking abilities.

Matric certificate meeting minimum admission requirements

A solid academic foundation is important, as pilot training includes theoretical subjects such as navigation, meteorology, and flight planning. Meeting the minimum requirements for further education demonstrates the student’s ability to cope with the academic component of training. While not a strict requirement, Mathematics and Physical Science will be to your advantage and can contribute positively to your training progress.

Minimum height of 1.56 metres

Physical requirements ensure that students can safely and effectively operate aircraft controls, maintain proper visibility from the cockpit, and reach all necessary instruments and equipment without restriction.

Healthy Body Mass Index (BMI)

Aviation medical certification requires individuals to meet certain health standards. Maintaining a healthy BMI supports overall fitness, endurance, and the ability to withstand the physical and mental demands of flying, while also reducing the risk of medical conditions that could affect flight safety.

Conclusion

These requirements help ensure that you are better equipped to manage both the theoretical and practical aspects of your training, allowing you to focus on developing the skills and knowledge needed to achieve your aviation goals.

We are committed to supporting you every step of the way and look forward to assisting you on your training journey.

TRAINING FOR PPL

Theory is crucial for becoming a safe pilot because it provides the foundational knowledge needed to understand how aircraft operate, how weather affects flight, and how to handle emergencies. Proper theoretical training helps pilots make informed decisions, interpret instruments accurately, and follow procedures that promote safety.

Without a strong grasp of theory, practical skills alone are not enough to manage complex situations in flight, this is why we place such strong emphasis on truly understanding the theory, rather than simply memorising questions and answers as many pilots tend to do today, especially in the PPL phase.

With the help of our study guides from Lazy Bird Learning and the support of our experienced flight instructors, you will be well prepared to pass the theoretical subjects with confidence.

You must pass 8 exams, each with a minimum passing mark of 75%. These exams are taken online at our accredited examination centre, which is officially connected to the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

  • Principles of Flight
  • Air Law
  • Human Performance
  • Meteorology
  • Aircraft Technical and General
  • Flight Performance and Planning
  • Navigation

We have added Applied Mathematics and Whizz Wheel 101 as additional non-compulsory subjects to the schedule, based on our experience that students often struggle with their application in aviation. These subjects provide a crucial foundation for all areas of study, enhancing your understanding and improving the practical application of your knowledge.

After completing ground school, the student may schedule examinations from Monday to Friday in the following available slots:

  • 09h00
  • 11h00
  • 13h00

Practical Pilot Training

During your PPL training, you will learn to do a pre-flight, post-flight, take-offs, and landings at different airports, how to file a flight plan, and interpret weather.  Learn how to navigate all instruments in the aircraft’s cockpit, including communication equipment, basic flight manoeuvres, and most importantly, approved safety and emergency procedures.

Your practical training consists of the following:

  • An estimated 20 hours of air briefings in a classroom,
  • Minimum of 25 hours dual flight training with an instructor including minimum of 5 hours dual cross country navigational flight
  • Minimum of 15 hours of solo flight training including a minimum of 5 hours solo cross country navigation flight
  • 5 Hours of Basic IF Simulator training
  • Practical flight and navigation skills test

Each flying session includes a theoretical component or briefing before and after each flight.  The student will be briefed on what to prepare for in terms of checks, flows, procedures, vital actions, and theory before the next flight.
